More News Outlets, Fewer Stories: New Media ‘Paradox’
By James Rainey, Times Staff Writer March 13, 2006
A “new paradox of journalism” has emerged in which the number of news outlets continues to grow, yet the number of stories covered and the depth of many reports is decreasing, according to an annual review of the news business being released today by a watchdog group.
Forbes.com issued a list of America’s 10 richest cities last week and Anchorage is No. 2. Really.
It’s based on census median household income figures, and Anchorage is second only to San Jose, Calif. Los Angeles and New York don’t make it over the threshold.
….
Ear doesn’t care about why. It’s just nice to be at the top of a list in some category other than violence and drunkenness. Here are the top five.Median HH income / Median home cost
1. San Jose: $71,765 / $623,000
2. Anchorage: $61,595 / $294,374
3. San Francisco: $60,031 / $726,900
Bethel (2000) $57,321 / $146,600 (Median Family Income: $62,431)
4. Virginia Beach: $55,781 / $192,000
5. San Diego: $51,382 / $605,600

Can you guess where any of these are from? (And yes, one of them is very easy!)
The easy one is the Y-K Delta (5th one down). But, easy as in having experience reading aerials and having flown over the geological regions.
My geology (hard and soft) was from the TC Chamberlin building on Beloit College campus. There are two great US places to view geology in action– the arid southwest USA and the arid southwest Alaska.
from the state’s community database

The Global Spread of Malaria in a Future, Warmer World
D. J. Rogers, and S. E. Randolph
in
Science 8 September 2000: Vol. 289. no. 5485, pp. 1763 - 1766
The frequent warnings that global climate change will allow falciparum malaria to spread into northern latitudes, including Europe and large parts of the United States, are based on biological transmission models driven principally by temperature. These models were assessed for their value in predicting present, and therefore future, malaria distribution. In an alternative statistical approach, the recorded present-day global distribution of falciparum malaria was used to establish the current multivariate climatic constraints. These results were applied to future climate scenarios to predict future distributions, which showed remarkably few changes, even under the most extreme scenarios.
